A Crochet Dress

The truth about shopping at Marshalls - the first thing I do when I get there is scope out the dress section. There's nothing I hate more than having to run out and find a dress on a whim. Marshall's is the perfect place to stock up on dresses that I know I love (and fit), so that when the time comes that I need one, it's already hanging in my closet waiting for me! Feminine isn't always my 'thing,' but feminine dresses are totally trending this season and Marshall's was actually overflowing in them.

From crochet and sheer fabrics, to lace and fit and flare dresses, lady-like seemed like the way to go. Embracing the girly-girl within, I grabbed as many as I could find and headed to the dressing room with a pile of super girly dresses. I'm so glad I did because this dress, that I'm seen prancing around town in below, is literally now one of my favorite dresses that I own. When I find a crochet dress, that fits beautifully, on amazing sale, in a gem of a color, with a low back, made by one of my favorite brands...I have no choice. It has to be mine and that was pretty much how the rest of this story went. What do you think of the lady-like Natalie?

Target Style: Stripes

For my fifth installment with Target, we’re talking about another one of Spring’s hottest trends that you can snatch up at Target – Stripes! Thin or chunky, horizontal or vertical, stripes were definitely a trend to watch after so many designers incorporated the design into their Spring 2013 runway collections. Stripes, to me, are always a challenge to style, and I love a good challenge! I adore the black and white, jailbird-like stripes soo much. But, I also enjoy the softer, more bohemian-like stripes. Target has both of these styles of stripes, and more, to choose from! Once again, I’ve rounded up my favorites for you to start shopping from!

When working stripes into your wardrobe, I think it’s essential to own those basic black and white pieces, like the peplum blouse seen below. Then you should work nautical stripes in as well, which you will then wear the crap out of this summer (so vacation ready – Hello!). I love the bold, coral stripes on this wristlet or the sailor blue stripes of this shirt. Then, a striped maxi dress is essential. I naturally am drawn to a neutral color pallet, but Target has so many colorful striped dresses as well! A striped maxi is so versatile. I style mine as a skirt quite often, with a shirt layered on over top [exhibit a].

What’s your favorite way to incorporate this Spring trend into your wardrobe?

Clear as Lucite

We are all settled in to our new condo and now it's time to start, my favorite, the decorating and adding personal touches. The one item of home decor that I am itching to get in our new home is something Lucite! Lucite feels so modern yet glam and glitzy at the same time, which are both elements that fulfill my decorating style right now. I especially love how it keeps the room feeling bright and open. It seems to be the next best thing to white furniture, right? Plus, I have to keep my home #fashionablybroke too, duh!

Here are some pictures that have been inspiring me lately, for ways to incorporate Lucite into my home that I thought I'd share with you. You can find more photos like these on my 'Design Inspired' Pinterest board here. And, of course, I will report back to give you a glimpse of what I do with Lucite in my own home! I'm thinking an end table or bar stools to start off with, what do you think?

How amazing is that bed frame?

Lucite trays for displaying jewelry would be an easy place to start!

Those bar stools - enough said.

Happy Monday! It's another week to achieve something great! Like buying some Lucite furniture! :)

Mint Sorbet

Happy Friday, loves! I am in New York and just wrapped up a super fun project with Marshalls that I can't wait to share with you! Working on this project required a lot of research shopping and I think if anyone is up for the job, it would be me, right?! I've been stalking all of the Marshalls in my area (and the one in NYC, which is killer by the way!) and scoping out what hot, Spring trends you can find. I've also been working hard searching for the best designer deals they have to offer in these trends as well and all I can say is ... cha-ching. Shopping at Marshalls is always such a thrill, they have insane deals that you will not find anywhere else, and well, I LOVE me a good deal!

DSC_0015

DSC_0034 DSC_0077 DSC_0075 DSC_0036 DSC_0093 DSC_0071

So - When you walk in the front door (as opposed to the back?) of any Marshalls you will find they've put their best foot forward this Spring - front and center, you'll find sorbet pieces like mint and coral. Sorbets just naturally catch my eye, so bright and dainty, but I wanted to show how you can spice up your sorbets a bit more my style. I paired this relaxed, mint blazer with a pair of basic, black leggings and high, high, high-heels. But this is just one of the many sorbet styles that Marshalls has to offer, so get in there and snatch up your favorites before everyone else does! And when you do find something awesome, share it with Marshalls on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #FabFound for a chance to win a $50 gift card!

I love the cross between a pastel and neon. It's such a nice twist and almost creates a new genre of flourecent-like colors. For example, this is a neon-mint blazer. Don't you love it?

Target Style: Easy Spring Colors

yellow and coral

When I think of Spring fashion, and shopping for the season, one of the first things that come to mind is the rebirth of Spring colors in my wardrobe. I think of bright and vibrant hues and how it's finally time to bring them back to life! And every season it’s just as exciting as the last. Especially, when it's still snowing in March (True Life: That's what's happening in DC right now). That's why, for our fourth installment with Target, we are spotlighting two of Spring's hottest colors - yellow and coral!

Worn best with a tan, yellow and coral just scream "warm weather" to me! So - I've picked out these spring staples just for you, in these favorite spring colors. I love just a casual tank paired with a cute, short skirt for any warm-weathered occasion. Each can be easily paired with sandals for daytime or dressed up with strappy heels for night. I've also chosen a few favorites from the accessories department too, to add a bit of my own personal touch of course – a printed blazer, a studded handbag and a pair of statement earrings. But don’t stop just here – check out Target for the endless outfit options that you can come up with that are made up of this Spring color combo!

The Fashionably Broke do dress layering.

jean jackets, dress layering, spring style jean jackets, dress layering, spring style jean jackets, dress layering, spring style jean jackets, dress layering, spring style jean jackets, dress layering, spring style

ASTR Crop Top, James Perse Dress (old, here's a skirt version), Vintage Levis Jean Jacket, Free People Shoes, Zara Purse, Rebecca Minkoff Sunglasses, Jennifer Zeuner Lariat Necklace, Carvelle Watch (the rest of my jewelry is either from Charm DC or Stella & Dot - message me for details!)

I love getting creative with no only what clothes I buy, but how I style my clothes, and in some cases, even re-purpose them [exhibit a]. I found the perfect, basic crop-top for summer (it's not see-through, #winning!) and, while we had above sixty degrees weather one Sunday in DC, I layered it over my favorite midi dress. Both are staples in my wardrobe for the summer - the crop top with high waisted skirts and shorts and the dress with... just everything. In this case, both paired with strappy, nude heels (best purchase as of late) and layered under a jean jacket to keep things day-time casual. I love basic outfits like this because it allows me to bust out the bold accessories, like a leopard print purse!

Do you ever get creative when dressing or WHAT? teach us your ways and show us on twitter - #fashionablybroke

Target Style: Easter Dresses

To me, Easter has always marked the first occasion where I needed to go out and find a new, Spring dress – and what girl doesn’t love a good reason to buy a new dress and get all dolled up? So, for my third installment with Target, we’re shopping for Easter’s best. Target has an insane amount of options, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites, which includes everything from a few maxi dresses for those who foresee a casual holiday (which is more our Easter style today) to some fun, fancy dresses for those of you who (like us about ten years ago) spend the morning at church followed by brunch at Clyde’s with the family.

Target being the one stop shop that it is – don’t forget to accessorize your look with a bright belt, colorful jewelry, and a new pair of shoes (just because you can)! All you have to do is take a few laps around (I consider my trips to Target as my daily workout routine – that store is huge, right?) and I guarantee you will find more than you ever imagined. So, here’s to Spring, a reason to buy a new dress, and a fashionably broke holiday!

A Spring Hair Trend

So, if you were thinking about cutting your hair, it's the year to do it!

shorthairtrendsspring2013

From Guiliana Rancic, to Liz of Late Afternoon, it seems everyone who was known for their long locks is now making the big CHOP! I took on the new, spring do a few months ago, when Nadine took off about four inches for me. And now it seems it's all about the one-length-all-around, right-past-the-shoulders hair-cut this season. It's all clean and chic and I'm obsessed with it. Which hair style do you prefer, long and beachy or short and chic?

You can't see my bra, kinda.

DSC_0995 DSC_1006 DSC_0978 DSC_1002

fresh #ombre, what up!

Prabal Gurung for Target Blouse, Jeans via Target, Shoe Dazzle Pumps, Nila Anthony Tote via TJ Maxx,
Vivienne Kelly Necklace, Carvelle Rose Gold Watch Stella & Dot Bracelets, Rings

I'm on a serious protest from see-through blouses right now, WHICH is actually strange for me, because that's all I own. But I've spent the winter freezing my butt off and worrying about what non-sexy things you can see through my see-through top, mainly when I sit down (YOU KNOW?). Do you ever have to make a concious effort to stop buying things that actually piss you off when you go to wear them? It's like I'm on a serious high when I'm shopping, that I can't even make sane decision (i.e. ONLY buying see-through tops, that aren't even day time or work appropriote, so they hardly ever get worn and it's just sad for everyone).

I went to stalk the Prabal collection at Target (had to), found this black on black lace blouse...It's opaque, and the rest is history! Of course I had to keep a few buttons undone to let my lacey bra peek through, of course. I dig a-pop-of lacey bra.
